A Guide to Graphic Design for Trade Show Exhibits and Displays

Trade shows are a valuable tool to generate leads and brand awareness. On average, companies set aside around 32% of their marketing budget to cover such events. If you’re going to spend money not only paying for exhibit booth space but also on the elements you’ll need for an eye-catching booth, you’ll want to create something that will capture the attention of event attendees.

Image Clarity
For the best possible clarity, images should be approximately 100-120 Pixels per inch (PPI). If you cannot recreate the graphic in that resolution, it might be best to hire a redesign specifically for your trade show presentations. It would be better to have an image very close to the original than to present a fuzzy, unprofessional looking graphic to potential customers.

Text on Images
Placing text on top of a photo or background image can make the text difficult to read. With so many competing booths at a trade show, most people won’t bother deciphering it. They will just move on to another display. Make sure you either use a solid background behind text or that you make the image transparent enough for the text to pop.

Company Style Guidelines
Does your company have a style guideline that lists the typical fonts and styles used in company literature? It is best to stick to this as closely as possible across all marketing mediums, even trade shows. If your company lists Tahoma as the preferred font, then use Tahoma or a similar font for trade show materials.

As a rule of thumb, print products look best with serif fonts, and digital mediums look best with sans-serif fonts. This is part of your company’s overall branding efforts and will pay off when your customer base readily recognized your company’s overall look.

Visibility From Different Distances
Another thing to consider is whether your trade show booth materials are visible at different levels. For example, at 100 feet away, is your booth visible? This is the first look the crowd will get at your booth, and it should draw people in from that distance. Think about placing banners high and how to hook attendees into visiting.

What about at 25 feet away? How can you grab their attention? Ideas include a visually dynamic video that highlights your product.

Consider visibility once someone stops at your booth. Where is the person’s gaze drawn? Is it visually enticing? What information does it provide? These different distances are called tiered content levels.

Negative Space
Everything from the size of font you use to the color of text and background can draw people in. You should also pay attention to how much negative space is around the text. Negative space can put the spotlight where you want it, such as on the text.

You need a strong balance between content and negative space. Experienced designers can figure out this balance so your graphics are visually pleasing to the masses. Too little negative space and your graphics will be busy and distracting. Too much negative space and your point might be lost in all the background noise.

Creating beautiful images for an exhibition will help you get the most attention possible and help the cost of the trade show booth pay for itself. With a little attention to detail, you’ll have some amazing displays you can use over and over again to entice new leads to become lifelong customers.
